I was anti-meetup for user groups a few years back. I am not now, and I
think it's important to have a meetup group. I have one for
ChicagoPythonistas and the hackerspace as one as well.
Word of mouth gets a group fewer people, and also has a selection bias for
people who know people -- which means you won't get people who don't
already know python (in my case) or are novice users, and so on.
I have mixed feelings about meetup. but for right now I want to use it
because it reaches a wider population of people, especially people who are
familiar with the concept of user groups.
I'm willing to chip in to pay for a meetup group for ChicagoLUG.
