Hi Steve,
Meeting people face to face and having an online presence on a service like meetup are complementary, IMHO.
The fact that meetup is basically an ‘activity aggregator’ makes it pretty attractive to a lot of people. Personally, I’ve found out about a lot of events I’d otherwise have not known about via meetup.
So long as the important stuff gets posted both to the list and to social media du jour, we can happily ignore the latter.
IMHO, meatspace is overrated :)
